In the way firms talk about community involvement, there is usually a logo in a footer and a one-off cheque at year end. We wanted something more connected. For the past several months, Sapere has been working alongside Smile Welfare Canada on exactly that: a working partnership that puts our finance team, our volunteer hours, and our fundraising reach behind a cause close to home.
With the charity's new CRA registration now official, we wanted to introduce Smile Welfare Canada properly, explain how Sapere is involved, and show how clients and friends of the firm can get involved too.
About Smile Welfare Canada
Smile Welfare Canada is a Mississauga-based registered Canadian charity delivering practical support to Canadians facing poverty. Its mission, in the charity's own words: "Bringing dignity, relief and hope to Canadians in need."
The charity's work covers five programs:
- 01Food assistance for individuals and families facing food insecurity
- 02Clothing and winter essentials, especially critical as Ontario winters settle in
- 03Shelter and housing support for those experiencing homelessness or housing instability
- 04Furniture and household essentials for families moving out of shelter or temporary housing
- 05Emergency relief in response to acute situations
Head office is at Unit 5, 2285 Dunwin Drive, Mississauga, ON L5L 3S3. Operations are Canada-wide, with early concentration in the Greater Toronto Area.
The CRA registration under number 77513 6229 RR0001 means that as of 2026, every eligible donation receives an official charitable tax receipt. For donors, that converts a gift into a credit against personal or corporate tax owing. For the charity, it unlocks the full range of institutional and corporate giving that requires a registered-charity receipt.
How Sapere supports the charity
Sapere's involvement runs through three channels, each in a different lane:
Finance, handled pro bono. We handle Smile Welfare Canada's financial administration at no charge to the charity. That covers bookkeeping, CRA T3010 Registered Charity Information Return filings, and the internal reporting the board needs to govern the organization properly. Keeping finance clean, transparent, and audit-ready is the single most important operational task a new charity has. Doing it in-house at Sapere means every dollar donated reaches the people the charity serves, not administration.
Volunteer hours on the ground. Members of our team volunteer directly on the charity's distribution and support work. Finance expertise is useful; so are two hands on a food-donation line.
Community fundraising. Sapere is partnering with Smile Welfare Canada on community fundraising activities, helping extend the charity's reach to donors and supporters who may not otherwise know the work. As a Mississauga-headquartered firm supporting a Mississauga-based charity, our networks and the charity's beneficiaries overlap in meaningful ways.
Our Managing Partner Sarosh Zafar serves as a director on the Smile Welfare Canada board, which is the formal governance link between the firm and the charity. Everything above is structured consistent with CPA Ontario's independence rules: Sapere does non-assurance accounting work (bookkeeping, T3010 compilations, and reporting), not audit or review engagements for the charity.
From Sarosh Zafar, Managing Partner, Sapere Accounting
“Smile Welfare Canada's work is close to home. These are our Mississauga neighbours facing food, clothing, and housing gaps that most people never see. Joining the board let me contribute directly. Opening Sapere's accounting work pro bono, with our team volunteering and helping on fundraising, makes sure every dollar donated reaches the people the charity serves, not administration.”

What the CRA charitable registration means in practice
Registered charity status in Canada is not just a label. It carries real operational and donor consequences:
- 01Tax receipts. Smile Welfare Canada can now issue official donation receipts for eligible gifts. Individual donors claim these on their T1 to reduce tax owing; corporate donors claim them on the T2. For higher-bracket donors, the effective cost of a $1,000 gift falls to approximately $500 to $550 after federal and provincial credits.
- 02Transparency. Registered charities file an annual T3010 return disclosing revenue sources, expenditures by program vs. administration, compensation of top-earning positions, and related-party transactions. This information is public on the CRA Charities Listings. Smile Welfare Canada's first T3010 will be filed for its first full fiscal year.
- 03Governance obligations. The charity must operate exclusively for its registered charitable purposes, maintain proper books and records, and comply with the disbursement quota rules. The Sapere team supports the finance side of that compliance.
- 04Access to institutional giving. Many foundations, corporate giving programs, and workplace giving platforms (United Way, Benevity, CanadaHelps) require CRA registration before a charity can appear on their platforms. Registration opens that door.
