Quick answers about personal income tax — based on current Canadian tax and accounting rules.

When is the Canadian personal income tax filing deadline, and what happens if I miss it?
For most individuals, the personal income tax (T1) return is due April 30. Self-employed individuals (and their spouses) have until June 15 to file, but any tax owing is still due April 30. Late filing triggers a 5% penalty on the balance owing, plus 1% per month for up to 12 months. Interest accrues on both the balance and the penalty from May 1 onward. Repeat late filers face higher penalties (10% plus 2% per month) for up to 20 months.
Do I need to file a Canadian return if I worked outside Canada for part of the year?
Most likely yes. Canada taxes its residents on worldwide income, regardless of where it's earned. If you remained a Canadian tax resident for the year, you'll report your foreign employment income on your T1, then claim a foreign tax credit for tax already paid abroad to avoid double taxation. If you became a non-resident partway through the year, you file as a part-year resident, and the foreign income earned after departure is generally not taxable in Canada. Tax treaties between Canada and the source country usually determine which side has primary taxing rights.
What deductions can I claim if I have both employment income and a self-employed side business?
Self-employed activity is reported on Form T2125 alongside your T4 employment income. Common deductible business expenses include a prorated share of home-office costs (utilities, rent or mortgage interest, property tax), business-use vehicle expenses (proportional to business kilometres), professional fees, software subscriptions, marketing, business meals (50%), and supplies. CPP contributions on the self-employed portion are paid in full by you (both employer and employee halves) but are partly deductible. The two income types share one return; losses from the business can offset other income within the same year.
Can Sapere represent me if I receive a CRA reassessment or audit notice on my personal taxes?
Yes. Sapere represents personal-tax clients with CRA when reassessment notices, Notices of Audit, or Information Requests arrive. We handle the correspondence on your behalf, prepare the supporting documentation, and walk you through what each notice requires.
